Montenegrin is a normative variety of Serbo-Croatian spoken mainly by Montenegrins and is the official language of Montenegro. Montenegrin is based on the most widely spoken dialect of Serbo-Croatian, Štokavian, more specifically the East Herzegovinian dialect, which is also the basis of standard Croatian, Serbian, and Bosnian.
Article 13 of the Montenegrin Constitution specifies that Montenegrin is the official language of Montenegro, and that both Latin and Cyrillic variants have equal status. In December 2017, Montenegrin was assigned the international code ISO 639-2 cnr.
