Swedish is a North Germanic language that is mutually intelligible with Danish and Norwegian. It was developed from Old Norse. The Swedish script is written in a modified Latin script. The vocabulary of Swedish is mainly Germanic, but many words in the fields of science and religion are of Latin or Greek origin, often borrowed through French or English.
Swedish literature is very well known. A total of six Swedish authors have received the Nobel Prize in Literature to date – S. Lagerlöf, C. G. Verner von Heidenstam, E. A. Karlfeldt, P. Lagerkvist, H. Martinson and E. Johnson. Literature for children and young people, represented mainly by Astrid Lingren, is also significant.
