Lithuanian is a language very similar to Latvian. The differentiation of these two languages began around the year 800. Lithuanian is one of the East Baltic languages. It is the official language of Lithuania, but is also widespread in certain parts of Latvia, Belarus, Russia and Poland. The oldest written record dates from the early 16th century. The first printed book is the Catechism of Martynas Mažvydas, which was published in Královec.
