Estonian is a language of the Balto-Finnic branch of the so-called Finno-Ugric languages, which means that it is related to Finnish and distantly to Hungarian. Estonian is therefore not related to the languages of neighboring countries, such as Russian, Latvian or Swedish. Estonian is not widely spoken. It is spoken by more than 1 million people, which is approximately the same as the population of Estonia.
