Bulgarian is a South Slavic language written in the Cyrillic alphabet. It is very similar to Macedonian. The total number of Bulgarian speakers is estimated at 9 million. The name “Bulgarians” originally referred to a people from Central Asia who settled in the Balkans around the 7th century. These Bulgars were assimilated by the local Slavic population, but the original Bulgarian people left a significant mark on both the vocabulary and grammar of the Slavic Bulgarian language. Bulgarian has the longest written form of all Slavic languages.
