Ukrainian is an East Slavic language and the official language of Ukraine. Ukrainian is most closely related to Belarusian, then to Russian and Polish. Ukrainian developed in the 10th century on Ukrainian soil along with Christianity, which spread through Church Slavonic. Church Slavonic gradually became the official written language.
