Dutch is a West Germanic language. The basis for Dutch was the Upper Franconian dialect. In lexicology and morphology, it has many features in common with German, but differs from it mainly in pronunciation and spelling. Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands, northern Belgium (Flemish), northern France, the former Netherlands Antilles, Suriname and partly in Indonesia. In South Africa (mainly in the Republic of South Africa), Dutch has developed into a separate language – the so-called Afrikaans.
