Chinese is a language that belongs to the so-called Sino-Tibetan language family. Chinese is used as a mother tongue by around 1.2 billion people, which is 16% of the world’s population. Chinese is spoken mainly in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and numerous Chinese communities abroad.
Chinese is written in Chinese characters. Chinese distinguishes 7 basic dialects, but regardless of the individual Chinese dialects, the vast majority of texts are written in the current standard language (for which the name “Mandarin” has become common).
